POINTS:
  • Speed
  • Inexpensive
  • Convenient
  • Impersonal
  • Possibility of miscommunication
  • Privacy issues

With the advent of the Internet, the way of our communication has dramatically changed, allowing us to keep in touch with others easily and quickly. Although we benefit a lot from digital communication, there are always negative aspects associated with modern communication tools.

On the positive side, digital communication has enabled us to communicate with people living far away. By using online telephone service like Skype, for example, we can talk and chat with anybody from all over the world. In addition, when you send e-mail, you can leave a message which can be read by the receiver whenever they are free to check it.

On the negative side, modern digital devices can make the way we communicate impersonal. Many people prefer to communicate face to face, arguing that it is very difficult to understand real emotions or true intention carried via digital devices. There are also many cases where miscommunication caused by digital devices led to serious consequences in business or friendship.

Furthermore, with digital technology come privacy issues. Personal information available online, such as Facebook, can be seen by others. Such information is often leaked and used for criminal activities. Also, the information uploaded by someone else can be false and misleading, and often intended to harm particular individuals. This surely constitutes an infringement of privacy.

In conclusion, it may be true that digital communication has improved our way of life, but we must keep in mind that there is a risk in relying too much on this impersonal and misleading ways of communication.
