[85]   [2017-2 A] Are enough public funds invested in the arts?
[ Should taxpayer money be used to support the arts? ] 2013-2 B

[ no more public funds ]

I believe enough public funds are already invested in the arts, [ and taxpayer's money should not be used to support them ]. I have two reasons.

First, the art industry usually receives plenty of donations or contributions from individuals or private companies. For example, special exhibitions in museums or art galleries are usually sponsored by large corporations, who often use these events to promote themselves or advertise their products. Also, in order to preserve or restore art works, some wealthy individuals or large companies make huge donations, so the government doesn't have to use public funds to support the arts.

Second, art is not directly related to the welfare of the public. Of course, arts, like music or paintings, make people relax and feel happy, but it doesn't mean poor people can get out of poverty or sick people are free from suffering. Instead of using public funds for art, the government should better spend our tax money on other public services, such as building schools or hospitals or providing an insurance to unemployed people.

[ yes, more public funds ]

I don't think enough public funds are invested in the arts, and more tax payers' money should be used to support them.

First, it is worth the cost to use tax money for art, because it can boost the local economy. For example, paintings or sculptures by famous artists can attract many people from different places or difficult countries. These people visit museums or art galleries and spend a lot of money on accommodations or restaurants. As a result, many people in the local area will be employed in the tourist industry, which can help improve the local economy.

Second, although art is very important in our daily lives, many artists struggle to make a living. For example, many graduates with art majors cannot find a full time job , and often end up with part-time jobs with small wages. Because of this, fewer and fewer people choose to be artists as their career. Also, many art schools today have difficulty keeping their business. They need a large amount of money to attract students or teach them in their facilities. For example, music schools need to purchase musical instruments or prepare music rooms with some electric devices for the students. Because of this, many art schools face financial problems, and some have already gone bankrupt.

For these reasons, I believe more public funds should be invested in art. Without enough artists available, we cannot even have public facilities with good designs
