[63]   [2018-1 A] Are the values of young people today different from those of previous generations?

I think that the values of young people today are different from those of previous generations, and I have two reasons for this.

First, many young people today put their family or private life before their work. Unlike today, people in the past often sacrificed their family or their own lives to their careers and worked overtime and went to work even on weekends. It wasn't so ununsual that fathers went back home every night after their children went to bed and rarely talked with them. Today, however, many young people go home right after they finish work and don't go out for dinner or drinks after work with their bosses or co-workers, as their older generations often did as a matter of course.

Moreover, young people today are less loyal to the companies they work for and more willing to change jobs to obtain new skills and new experience. This is because in today's global competition, the seniority system and life-time employment are becoming a thing of the past. Instead, people are hired or promoted to better positions, based on their performance, not base on the length of time they work for certain companies.

Finally, family values of young people are changing, and they are less likely to care for their old parents by themselves. In the past, children were expected to live with their parents after they got very old and were expected to provide care to them at home. However, in today's society, people tend to live in the nuclear family, away from their old parents, so they think that their parents should take care of themselves. Therefore, they feel less resonpsible for taking care of their old parents. Instead, they often send their parents to nursing home after they need someone to take care of them.

For these reasons, I believe that the values of young people today are different from those of previous generations. Thank you for listening.
