[62]   [2018-1 A] Is the privatization of public services good for the general public?

I do not believe that the privatization of public services is good for the general public. I have several reasons why I believe so.

First, most private companies are profit-oriented, so they don't think so much about welfare of the general public or safety of public services. For example, if the public transportation networks, such as trains or buses, were privatized, private companies would focus only on how they can increase their profits, or how they can cut down on their expenses. As a result, they might stop the services for less populated areas, which can cause great inconvenience to the local people. Also, they might reduce the costs on enough safety measures to avoid accidents, which can put a great risk on the public safety.

Second, although some people may argue that privatization can lead to competition among private companies, which can result in better and cheaper public services, I still believe otherwise. In fact, privatization can actually allow them to monopolize public services and control the prices as they like. In the worse case, they may decide to set the prices even higher than those set by the government. As a consequence, many poor people will not be able to afford the services they deserve.

Also, public services provided by the private sector are not reliable. In reality, private companies can fail their business and may go bankrupt. If this happens, important public services will be disrupted or suspended, and many people will be negatively affected. Moreover, once a private company causes a problem, such as a nuclear power accdient, they may not be able to compansate for the damage, which can contribute to suspension of the public services.

For these reasons, I disagree with the idea that the privatization of public services is good for the general public. Thank you for listening.
