[56]   [2018-2 A] Can history education be free from bias?
I don't think history can be free from bias. I have two reasons.

First, history textbooks are written from the viewpoint of one country. Because of this, many negative facts of the history are often omitted. For example, during World War II, the Japanese military invaded many parts of Asian countries and killed lots of innocent people there. However, much of such negative aspects are not written in the textbooks in Japan, and only historical facts, which the government thinks are good enough to let people know, are written.

In fact, the Japanese government strictly censors the textbooks and gives approval only to the ones that they think are proper to education. Similarly, many textbooks written by some other Asian countries describe and emphasize wronging by Japan, and by so doing, they can keep their citizens patriotic to their nations.

Second, history teachers can be baised when they teach their students. It is natural that everyone sees things from different perspectives, but eductors are very influential and if they have radical or extreme ideas about historical facts, their students can be influecend by them and come to believe what they say is right.

Third, as the saying goes, "history is written by the winners." Which means history is created by the one which defeats the others in wars and told from its standpoint. For example, hundreds of years ago, many people from Europe migrated to what they call "New world" and started to create a new country. In this process, many European people killed Native Americans and took their territories by force." This should be an invasion of the land, but because it was European people that conqured the continent, they can even say "America was discovered in 1492". Likewise, If Germany had won Word War II, Hittler could have been a historic hero, and Japan could have been a nation which has established the New World in the Asian continent.

For these reasons, I don't think history can be free from dias. Thank you for listening.
