[52]   [2018-2 A] Is society taking the issue of fake news seriously enough?

I don't think that society is taking fake news seriously enough, and I have two reasons.

First, because of the wide-spread of the Internet, fake news can be distributed or disseminated much more easily and quickly than ever before. Once someone places wrong information online, it can be seen by anyone around the world instantly. When they put fake news on Tweeter, for example, thier firends may read it. If they retweet it, firends of theirs can also read it. Thanks to this convenience of the Internet, fake news can be read by millions of people all over the world, and it can be spread in a matter of minute once they put a message online even with their smart phone.

Second, fake news often comes out in the event of a natural disaster, and it creats a great confusion among the general public. For example, when a huge earthquake hit Japan in 2011, there were numberless of rumors that commodities or daily supplies would run out. Then, many people panicked and ran to stores, trying to buy up everything they could, things like groceries or toilet paper. As a result, everything in stores was gone and many people had trouble buying things for their everyday lives.

Also, some people spread fake news that all the produce grown in Fukushima were contanimated with radioactive materials due to the nuclear power plant accident. Consequently, the farmers living there had difficulty living their lives.

For these reasons, I believe society should take the issue more seriously and take the appropriate measures against it.
