[30]   [2020-1 A] ---- Is capital punishment an effective dterrent to crime?

[ Speech 1 ]

There has been ongoing debate in the world on whether or not death penalty should be abolished. Personally, I think capital punishment should be abolished. There are two reasons why I believe so.

First, I don't think it is sensible to put criminals to death whatever the crime they committed. Some might say death sentence is inevitable when they consider the feelings of the victim's family, but the victim will never come back to life even if the criminal is executed. So, I don't see any positive meanings to kill someone just because he killed someone else. Instead, I think it is much better to let him alive and make him sorry for what he has done, spending the rest of his life. And if possible, they should rehabilitate him and give him another chance to contribute to society in some ways. Probably, he could hold a seminar in prison to appeal to the public not to commit crimes.

Second, there are some cases reported in the media that criminals were wrongfully accused and executed, only to find they were completely innocent. Sometimes, the police force people to say what they want to hear, threatening and hurting them. Abused by the police, they are forced to admit a crime which they didn't commit. Considering the fact, capital punishment cannot simply be justified, because there is a possibility that some innocent people can be executed.

For these reasons, death penalty should be abolished. In fact, among developed countries, only Japan and the united stated still keep it. I think Japan should stop death penalty in the near future and join other developed countries.

[ Speech 2 ]

Capital punishment cannot be justified. There are several reasons why I believe this.

First, everybody has a life and you can't say which life is more important than others. Some might say criminals who committed murder deserve the punishment to death, but every criminal has his own life which should be dignified as much as anyone else's. No one can play God judging others and taking their lives.

Second, some people may say capital punishment can act a deterrent to serious crimes, but there is little evidence that people are discouraged from committing crimes. In fact, only a few people think of the punishment when they commit crimes.

In conclusion, I'm strongly against capital punishment. It is too cruel and too inhumane. Also, it is not effective, and not reasonable. Thinking of the fact that among developed countries, only Japan and the United States carry Death penalty, we should abolish the system as soon as possible.

[ Speech 3 ]

I believe capital punishment, or death penalty, is justifiable, and it helps keep the world in good order. Let me explain why.

The first reason is that capital punishment is an effective deterrent to premeditated crimes. Some people are not afraid of being taken to prison, since they are provided with food and shelter for free, and released after some years of imprisonment. But execution is a different story. The fear of being given a death sentence more or less helps discourage people from committing crime.

The second reason is that in some cases, it is only fair that criminals are punished with death penalty. For example, the criminal who committed murder well deserves execution. There is a saying that goes "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." Considering the victim's family who lost their beloved family member, capital punishment can be justified especially in murder cases.

In conclusion, I believe death penalty is justifiable. It works well to lower the crime rate and keep the world safe.
