[290]   [2010-2 B] Are books in danger of becoming obsolete?
I like reading books, and I read them almost every day. At the same time, I also use the internet, and find it very useful to get a variety of information easily and quickly. As for me, both are necessary in my daily life, but considering the current trend, I think eventually books will be replaced by electronic media. There are some reasons why I believe so.

First of all, books take a lot of space to store. When you have hundreds of books in your house, you might need large bookshelves to keep your books in. When you live in a small apartment, it is hard to keep a lot of books in your place. Also, when more books are being published at today's rate, even huge libraries will be saturated with books, and in the end, a lot of land will have to be used just to store books. Electronic media like personal computers, on the other hand, can store a large number of information in a small machine. Moreover, you can find the information you need just by clicking a mouse or pressing a button in no time. When you want to find the book you need in a large bookshelf, it will take a much longer time to get what you need.
Secondly, books are made of paper, so some people might think it is a waste of resources. In order to produce paper, a lot of trees have to be cut down. To make matters worse, when books or magazines are thrown away, and burned as garbage, they produce a lot of carbon dioxide, resulting in global warming. Today, environmental problems are a big concern through the world, so more people will think it is more environmentally-friendly to rely on electronic media instead of books.

Lastly, electronic media is much easier to carry around. I think an electronic dictionary is the best example for this. The latest electronic dictionary has a lot of functions and a larger collection of paper dictionaries. Some of them contain more than 10 different dictionaries within a small gadget, and you can use it anywhere even in a crowded train. On the other hand, if you carry the same number of paper-written dictionaries, it is very heavy and bulky. You need to have a big bag to carry books with.

In summary, although electronic media has some problems to deal with, such as infringement of copy rights, or digital divide between rich and poor people, I think in the future, books will be eventually replaced by electronic media. It is better than books in terms of convenience and the environment.
