[285]   [2010-2 A] Should large companies in Japan make English their official language?
[Pros]

In today's globalized world, English is predominantly spoken all over the world. With this trend, English, as an international language, will be more and more important. Therefore, I believe large companies in Japan need to adopt English as their official language.

First, there are a growing number of foreign people from around the world already working in Japan. It is especially true in large corporations. So, in order to communicate with each other, there should be a common language at work. Otherwise, business won't go smoothly and will harm productivity and profitability. Some might say they are working in Japan, so they should learn Japanese, but our language, especially written Japanese, would be pretty hard to learn for most foreign people. English, on the other hand, is taught at school in most countries, and Roman alphabets are not as difficult to learn as our written language.

Also, it is beneficial and profitable for companies to make English an official language at work. If they have many employees who can speak fluent English, they can send the workers overseas to promote their business. Also they will have more opportunities to trade with foreign corporations, and expand their business market all over the world. Furthermore, they learn to know foreign expertise from skilled workers overseas, and raise productivity and competitiveness with rival companies.
For these reasons, large companies in Japan should make English their official language. Considering the fact that English is already a common language in business, and most Japanese companies have to follow suit in order to keep competitive in the world.

[cons]

I don't think English should become the official language in large corporations. There are several reasons why I believe so.

First of all, it is not practical at all to make English an official language at work in Japan. In reality, most Japanese workers can't speak English well. If they had to use English all the time at work, the business would go very slowly, and damage company profitability as well as productivity. Also, companies would have to spend large amounts of time and money making their employees fluent in English. Such a requirement would be impractical and waste of time and money.

And we are Japanese, and it is only natural that we speak Japanese in Japan. Although an increasing number of foreign people are working in Japan, a majority of workers in Japan are still Japanese. We have homogeneous culture and we are racially homogeneous too, and we respect "harmony" as work ethic. If we were forced to speak English, it would hurt our identity, culture, and tradition, which we all think are important.

In conclusion, while English is becoming the international language and important for business people, it should not be made the official language in large companies. That would hurt the companies and also harm Japanese society as a whole.

[Pros]
1. Globalization → importance of an international language

2. profitable ( trade with more foreign companies )

3. foreign expertise → high productivity / competitiveness

[cons]

1. impractical
( inability of English / less productive / less profitable )

2. identity as Japanese

3. biased evaluation
( people who speak fluent English tend to be highly evaluated regardless of their skills )
