[282]   [2010-2 A] Should more be done to discourage people from migrating to the city?
Many people are attracted to live in the city, but this can cause some problems in the city as well as in the countryside. In this respect, I believe more should be done to discourage people from migrating to the city.

First, the population in the countryside will decline as many young people move out to the city. As a result, local companies or farmers will not have enough workers to support their business. Also, the local government will find it hard to secure enough tax revenues to maintain the social welfare system. Therefore, the rural area will suffer from a declining population.

Second, the city will face serious environmental problems when more people migrate there. With increasing populations, there will be more traffic on the streets, which causes air pollution. Also, people living near major roads will suffer from all the traffic noise.

Lastly, a large city is usually a center of entertainment. Many people are attracted to go and live near the places like casinos, bars, or amusement parks. On the other hand, this excitement can also bring about more crime. It is generally said that a crime rate i higher when many people concentrate in a small, crowded area.

For these reasons, I believe people should be discouraged from migrating to urban centers. In order to achieve the goal, local governments should take measures to attract young people to stay in their hometown.
