[274]   [2010-3 A] Is military strength the most important element of national security?
Living in Japan myself, I never believe that military strength is the most important element of national security. There are much more important things to do to keep a country safe.

Before putting weight on military strength, a country must try to solve domestic issues first. Countries like Japan are suffering from numerous social problems such as low birth rates, insufficient health care, and pension system. These are a bigger threat to a nation than the one from other countries. If the problems get worse, the people get desperate and try to overthrow the government.

Second, military strength of one country is nothing but a threat to its neighboring countries, and it might deteriorate the relationship. They might feel that they also have to make their own military strong, and start a war against it. Instead of making the military stronger, the government should try to create friendly relationships with other countries. Even if the tension occurs between countries, military actions shouldn't be necessary, since the international organization like the United Nations intervenes and solves the dispute.

For these reasons, military strength is not the most important element of national security. It can scare other countries, and can give a reason for starting a war, which in fact makes a nation less secure.
