There is a growing trend that job promotion is based on how well you perform at work, rather than how long you have worked for a company. With this trend, I think company loyalty is becoming a thing of the past. Let me explain why.
 
First of all, an increasing number of companies are adopting merit system, and giving up seniority-based pay system, so many competent workers often change their jobs, looking for better salaries and better working environment, which means many employees work at one place for a few years, and leave the place. At the same time, unskilled workers that can't meet their company's demand are likely to be fired or replaced by more competent workers.
 
However, in the past, more people were loyal to the company they worked for, because they were sure that they could work for the same company until they retire. But with today's low birth rate, such life-time employee system is not working, and companies are always looking for better and more skilled workers to keep competitive in today's globalized business world.
 
Today's aging society is also to blame for losing company loyalty. With more old employees and less young workers, it is impossible to maintain seniority-based system. As a result, companies have to let go unproductive old workers with high salaries and more productive workers with lower salaries to keep their business running.
 
In conclusion, as the employee system is changing from seniority and meritocracy, workers are losing loyalty toward their companies they work for, and surely company loyalty is becoming a thing of the past.
