[251]   [2011-3 B] Should juveniles who commit serious crimes be tried as adults?
There's been ongoing debate on whether minors should be punished as severely as adults in this increasingly complex society. I believe young people who commit serious crimes should be tried as adults.

To support my idea, severe punishment or jail sentence can be an effective deterrent to young people committing crimes. It is true that young people tend to act compulsively, and often don't consider the punishment before they commit crimes, but many would have second thoughts if they notice strict punishment is waiting for them and how they could ruin the rest of their lives.

Also, severe jail sentence against juveniles can help keep the public safe. Criminals tend to commit crimes repeatedly, and it's also true of juvenile crimes. Since punishment against juveniles is not strict enough, they are soon released back to society, and commit the similar crime. In order to protect the public, severe punishment to young people is necessary.

Lastly, people often say that young criminals should be rehabilitated in certain institutions instead of locking them up in jail, but it costs a lot, and it's not effective. The costs should be better spent elsewhere on the public welfare, not for criminals. I believe giving severe punishment to either youths or adults is important to keep our society peaceful.
