[238]   [2012-1 A] Is Japan doing enough to protect its cultural heritage?
Japan has a long history, and needless to say, there are a lot of cultural aspects we can be proud of to the world. However, it seems like Japan is not doing enough to protect the cultural heritage. As a result, our unique culture seems to be phasing out.
The first thing that comes to mind is sports. Traditional sports like sumo, kyudo, or kendo, are getting less and less popular. I believe that's partly because the government is not trying enough to encourage people to take up such traditional sports. Although baseball is still popular, foreign sports like soccer are becoming more and more influential, and people are losing interest in traditional sports of Japan.

Second, I believe traditional buildings should be protected more and promoted more, so that many visitors, including foreign tourists, can go visit the sites. There are several cases I've heard where people broke in and did some damage to traditional buildings. I think they should enhance security to protect our cultural heritage site. Also, restoration effort is not good enough, and some of the buildings or structures are falling into decay. I know that big lantern in the temple in Asakusa was restored, but there must be some more at the risk of decaying.

That's why I believe Japan should be doing more to protect the cultural heritage. We have great culture, so we should pay more attention to our own cultural aspects, and promote it to the world, which is, after all, for the benefit of our own.
