[214]   [2013-1 B] ---- Can businesses be ethical and still be profitable?
People benefit a lot from thriving economy, where businesses from different fields provide us with different services and give us job opportunities. At the same time, companies, or businesses, have certain obligation to the local community they operate in.

First, they are responsible for protecting the environment in their local area. When they operate factories, for example, they must make sure they meet the strict regulation set by the government, and try to minimize negative effects on the environment. There are quite a few cases, in the past, where companies caused environmental destruction and many people suffered because of it.

Second, they are obliged to help the local people as much as possible, especially in an emergency. They can be very helpful in many fields, depending on what they are specialized in. For example, businesses from food industry can provide free food when there is a natural disaster like an earthquake, or businesses with large space can provide shelter to the local people. Since businesses are receiving a lot of benefits, and making profits in the local economy, they must return a favor to the local community when they are needed.

In conclusion, it is true that all companies operate their business mainly to make profits, but they are responsible for keeping the area safe and clean, and helping the local people at whatever level they can. By keeping good relationship, both of the sides can benefit a lot from thriving economy.
