[213]   [2013-1 B] ---- Is the use of surveillance cameras in public places a good thing?
Almost everyone noticed that there are an increasing number of security cameras in public places, and some say it's uncomfortable. I personally believe, though, it is a good trend.

First, surveillance cameras are an effective way to discourage people from committing crimes in general. For example, people will hesitate to steal something if they are being watched by a camera. Also if surveillance cameras are placed in dark places or not busy streets, women feel safe to walk through the place. Also, there are quite a few cases where security cameras set in public places helped identify criminals.

Second, security cameras help detect terrorist activities or premeditated crimes.
It is very difficult to track down on terrorism or organized crimes today, because criminals are becoming more sophisticated, and terrorist activities are well organized. In order to fight against terrorism and serious crimes, surveillance cameras can be one of the best tools.

Although some people might say it can be infringement of privacy, or the information obtained by these cameras can be abused or misused, the benefits of setting surveillance cameras always outweigh its disadvantages.
