[208]   [2013-1 A] Have technological advances made the world a safe place?
Thanks to many advances in technology, we have a much better life than our earlier generations, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the world has become a safer place to live.

First, technological advancement has allowed people to create destructive weapons like nuclear bombs. Of course we can use nuclear power for peaceful purposes, like, to generate electricity, but once a nuclear accident occurs, many people, or animals suffer, and in the worst scenario, it could destroy the entire world. Also if a terrorist group captured nuclear plants, they would threaten the whole world.

Moreover, technological advancement has contributed a great deal to environmental destruction. We use cars, airplanes, heaters, air-conditioners, or many others, all of which consume a lot of energy and produce carbon dioxide or pollutants, which lead to global warming. Since we are so used to this comfortable life that we rarely think this convenience is destroying the environment. With natural resources diminishing, and global warming accelerating, we will be in big trouble due to technological advances we have achieved up to today.

For these two reasons, I don't think technology has made the world a safe place to live today.
