[207]   [ ??? ] Does university education prepare young people for real life?
Probably most high school students or graduates aspiring to go on to study at university think university education provides them with practical skills for real life, but they will soon find it's not always the case.

First most professors are specialized in a certain academic subject, and they teach students only their interest or specialty. For example, I majored in English hoping to learn practical English, but most of the professors of mine only taught their specialty, such as American literature, syntax, or English history, and I had only a few chances to learn conversation or communicative skills.

Second, most majors or courses are evaluated by tests or term papers, so students always think about or worry about how well they can perform on exams, and pay less attention to class activities. It is often the case that some students rarely attend class, but they only study hard before the term exams, and then manage to get credits.

For these reasons, university education doesn't prepare young people for real life. Actually, university curriculums themselves are not suited for real life. Most universities make freshmen and the second-year students take liberal arts subjects like history or philosophy, and most students can take their majors from the 3rd grade. Which means there are only 2 years for what they want to learn. I hope university education changes for the better.

I think the university is a good place to prepare young people for real life.

First, some courses universities provide are useful for future careers, especially with few students in a student-orientated class. Since all the students participate in discussions, they can learn skills of debate, cooperation, negotiation, all of which are surely important in a real life.

Also university life provides occasions for student to engage in various social activities that help prepare them for real life. For many young people, their years at college will be a time when they live apart from their families, join parties, develop relationships and travel both in their own country and overseas. Moreover, this is a time when they can have part-time jobs and learn to mange their own finances. Throughout their college life, they will make a lot of mistakes, but they are all important lessons for the future.
