[195]   [2013-3 B] Has the Internet made people's working lives easier?
Pros and cons : Telecommuting

Thanks to the advancement of the Internet, an increasing number of people work from home, instead of going to work. Without doubt, this convenience has brought us many benefits, but there are also disadvantages associated with telecommuting.

First, telecommuting helps save a lot of expenses. For example, employees don't have to spend money on transportation, while employers don't need to pay rents for office spaces and parking lots for their employees. With less traffic during the rush hour created by telecommuting, there will also be less pollution, which is surely good for the environment.

Second, telecommuting is helpful for mothers with small children. Traditionally working mothers have to take their children to nurseries, and pick them up after work. It is time-consuming and sometimes difficult to find a nursery available nearby. Moreover, some nursery schools are so expensive that families with low incomes cannot afford them. Now that people can work from home, however, they can take care of their children while working at home.

Despite all the advantages, there are some negative aspects regarding telecommuting. For instance, some people complain that they feel isolated from society when they work at home day after day. They don't have opportunities to talk with other co-workers. As a result, they feel lonely and mentally depressed. Also working from home every day discourages people from doing exercise, which can cause serious health problems like heart attack or diabetes.

In conclusion, telecommuting is surely beneficial for people in today's society, but there are also disadvantages to working from home. Keeping this in mind, we should make the best use of it to bring us the best interests.
