There has been ongoing debate on the use of surrogate mothers.

Some may argue that surrogacy is not acceptable because it is ethically wrong, but I believe the advantages created by the use of surrogate mothers far outweigh the disadvantages.

 

First, surrogacy can give infertile couples opportunities to have a baby. Although the opponents claim that adopting a child is a better way to do so, most parents would like to have babies who carry their own genes and DNA. The baby born in surrogacy, in effect, has the same physical features and characteristics as their parents, so it is most likely that the baby grows up and has a happy life with their parents.

 

On the other hand, there are many cases where adopted children were abused by their host parents. Since they are not biologically related to their parents, they don't receive as much affection as those raised by their own parents. As a result, they feel isolated at home and left out of their family. It is said that adopted children tend to have mental problems and commit crimes later in life.

 

Lastly, surrogacy can help increase birth rates. With this latest technology more available and affordable, more people will be encouraged to have babies regardless of their ages and problems with pregnancy. This will especially benefit countries like Japan where more young people are needed to replace the aging workforce and support the welfare system.

 

For these reasons, I believe the use of surrogate mothers can be justified. Governments around the world should make the clear guidelines on surrogacy, so that people can make the best use of the technology.
