[139]   [2015-3 B] Does the death penalty deter people from committing crimes?
I do not think that the death penalty deters people from committing crimes. I have two reasons.

First, most people do not consider the punsihment when they commit crimes. This is especially true of minors, who tend to act compulsively. In many murder cases, for example, they start an argument for some reason, pick up a fight, and then kill somone by accident. It is often true that such criminals were drunk and don't even remember what they have done. Also, other people have a grudge against society or no hope for the future. Surely, those people don't think of the punishment before they commit serious crimes. Therefore, the death penalty cannot be a deterrent to crime.

Second, most crimes committed by people do not derseve the dealth penalty. For example, everyone knows minor crimes, such as shoplifting or traffic violation, wouldn't result in the death penalty, so they are not discouraged from committing crime just because of the punishment. Also, white-collar crime, such as embezzling money from the government or corporations, won't lead to the sentence to death either, so many actually commit such crimes and some even get away with it.

For these reasons, the dealth penalty cannot act as a strong deterrent to crime and will not help reduce the crime rate in general.
