I believe censorship can be justified even in a democratic society today.

 

First of all, it is true that freedom of speech must be protected in a democratic society, but some people misinterpret what freedom of speech means and often abuse it. For example, because of anonymous nature of the Internet, some people say whatever they want to to others and hurt other people's feelings. If they are allowed to do so, they violate one of the important human rights to happines, which should not be tolerated in a democratic society.

 

Second, the government also needs to ensure public safety. If they are investigating a crime or a terrorist attack, it is necessary for them to check some information on such criminal activities. This means in order to protect citizens, censorship is more important than freedom of speech or the right to know, which are respected in a democratic society.

 

For these reasons, I believe censorship can be justified in today's society.

Thanks to many advances in technology, we have more ways to send and receive information today. This is great advancement, but it seems to have gone a little too far. I believe the government has the right to censor some contents of information available in society.

 

First, some books, movies, or websites available on the Internet need to be censored. Some of them contain too much violence and sex, and therefore harmful to young people. It's often said that some young people are influenced by such harmful contents, and commit crimes.

 

Also, government censorship can be justified to fight against terrorism, or other organized crimes. High-tech, or sophisticated criminals often rely on the internet to exchange information. If the government always keeps an eye on such suspicious information online, these people are deterred from committing crimes,

Also, computer criminals like hackers who try to destroy computer systems, or white color criminals who try to steal money by breaking into online systems are discouraged if the government is always watching them as Big Brother.

 

For these reasons, I believe government censorship can be justified. No matter how uncomfortable we might feel, it keeps us safe and secure.
