[ speech 1 ]

One day, a couple was at a gas station. The man was filling his car with gas, while the woman was looking at the meter on the gas pump. She said to him that the car used so much gas. She looked concerned.

The next day, the couple was at home. She was showing him an advertisement in the newspaper for a hybrid car. It said that they let customers test-drive a hybrid car. While reading it, he looked interested.

The following weekend, the couple went to the car dealer. They were test-driving a car that was advertised in the newspaper. The salesperson said to them that the car was very fuel-efficient. They looked happy driving a car.

After the test drive, the salesperson was telling them the price of the car. It was very expensive. The woman said to the man that ordinary cars were cheaper.

One day, a couple was at a gas station. The husband was putting gas into his car, and his wife was checking the meter on the gas pump. She looked concerned and told him that the car had consumed a lot of gas.

The next day, the woman showed the man a newspaper ad about a hybrid car. He thought that driving a car like that would be a good way to reduce energy consumption and save money.

The following weekend, the couple was at a car dealer driving a car like the one they had seen in the advertisement. The sales representative told them the car was very energy-efficient, and the couple looked pleased while driving.

After the test drive, the couple was in the car dealer's showroom. The salesman was showing them a leaflet [ brochure ] about the car. The price was written on it, and the wife told her husband that normal cars were much cheaper than hybrid ones.

[ Questions ]

No.1 Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the husband, what would you be thinking?

I'd be thinking, " It doesn't make sense to buy a hybrid car. Normal cars are becoming more fuel-efficient these days, so we should get one of those instead.

No.2 Should the use of private cars be restricted in city centers?

Yes. This would encourage people to use public transportation and stop driving to work or driving into city centers. By doing so, traffic jams and air pollution would be reduced, which makes the city center a better place to live.

No.3 Do you think that there is too much advertising on TV?

Definitely. Some TV programs have commercials almost every 10 minutes. This spoils the flow of the programs and make TV viewers change channels.

No.4 Are some Japanese people too concerned about saving money these days?

Yes. I think it negatively affects the Japanese economy. If people don't spend money, it prevents economic growth because businesses cannot make a profit.
