[ speech 1 ]

One day, a couple was at home with their son. He said to his parents that his friends had portable game players, and that he wanted to have one, because he felt he was left out of the group. His parents looked a little concerned, but they agreed to buy one.

That weekend, the couple went to an electronics store to buy a portable game player for him. The man thought his son would be pleased with his gift.

A month later, the couple was at home. The son and his friends were sitting on the sofa playing on their video game players. The woman looked concerned, and she said to the man that they were always playing video games.

Three months later, the son got back home from school. He had brought home his school report card, and he looked worried while his parents were reading it. The woman said to him that his grades had dropped.

[ speech 2 ]

One day, a couple was at home with their son. The couple were sitting at the table facing their son, who was telling them about portable game players. He explained that all his friends had one, and he asked them to buy him one too. His parents weren't sure if it was a good idea to let him have a game player.

That weekend, the couple happened to see portable game players displayed for sale at one of the shops in the department store, and decided to buy one for their son. The man imagined his son excited about the gift.

A month later, their son was at home sitting on the sofa with his friends, playing video games. On the other hand, the couple was sitting at the table talking about their son. The woman told the man that their son and his friends were always playing on those video game players.

Three months later, the son came back home with a school report card. He showed it to his parents. While his mother was reading it, his father was standing next to her with his arms folded and looked concerned. Finally, his mother told him that his grades had dropped.

[ Questions ]

No.1 Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the father, what would you be thinking?

I'd be thinking, "Maybe my son is too young to have a game player. If he were more mature, he would realize how important studying is and wouldn't be so easily distracted."

No.2 Do you think that modern technology has improved people's lives?

Yes. The development of the Internet has made life convenient. People have better access to information and can do things like shopping without leaving their homes.

No.3 Should children's education be the responsiblity of parents as well as schools?

Yes. Schoolteachers can teach academic subjects, but only parents can teach their children the moral values they need to become responsible members of society.

No.4 Should the government provide financial support for people who have children?

Yes. The birthrate in Japan is dropping, so there won't be enough workers to support the Japanese economy in the future. Financial support encourages people to have children.
